![]() Markets, profits, and capital are all historical constructs that depend on choices. Our economy, Piketty observes, is not a natural fact. ![]() He exposes the ideas that have sustained inequality for the past millennium, reveals why the shallow politics of right and left are failing us today, and outlines the structure of a fairer economic system. In this audacious follow-up, Piketty challenges us to revolutionize how we think about politics, ideology, and history. Thomas Piketty's bestselling Capital in the Twenty-First Century galvanized global debate about inequality. ![]() The epic successor to one of the most important books of the century: at once a retelling of global history, a scathing critique of contemporary politics, and a bold proposal for a new and fairer economic system. ![]()

![]() ![]() It feels very real and well thought through. ![]() Some the concepts and class divisions are very similar. The closest book for comparison I think is A Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. Cherryh uses this concept to craft an interesting world with some intense class divides and thought provoking concepts. ![]() Essentially the story is about trying to build exact copies of people through a combination of cloning and something called tape learning (a method of recording and transferring skills and memories from one person to anyone who uses the tape. The reason you listen to this book is the world/ concept building. I could describe the plot in short but I don’t think that you listen to this book for the story. I shall start by saying I enjoyed it, but I wouldn’t recommend it to just anyone. The characters are tricky to relate too at times and the plot is very subtle. Rapid review Slow paced, but interesting and entertaining for people who really enjoy concept driven sci-fi. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Packed with enough ideas to fuel two or three books, Bick's ambitious, intelligent, and relentlessly dark novel is a notable achievement, even if it (understandably) wavers beneath its own weight. ![]() One thing she loves about the neighbors: They're very quiet and come around for sugar only once in a blue moon. Sometimes he could ease their pain, just a little. Their families had dragged them in through the hallways and begged Father to use his Hermetic arts to cure them. It was even more horrible for us because we regularly saw the victims of demon attacks, screaming or mute with madness. Don’t look at the shadows too long or a demon might look back. ![]() When my twin sister, Astraia, and I were little, we heard the same terrible story as other children: Demons are made of shadow. I eyed the shadowed corners of the library. I leaned against the shelves and wished I could run, wished I could scream at the people who had made this fate for me. All afternoon I skulked in the library, running my hands over the leather spines of books I would never touch again. The day before the wedding, I could barely breathe. ![]() ![]() ![]() This book is like an onion with many layers to peel, any one of which can bring you to tears.Īs a boy, Ludwik experiences feelings for another boy who shares his feelings.
